Uttarakhand: The sacred Kedarnath Temple, one of the most important shrines of Lord Shiva, officially opened its doors for devotees on 22 April 2026. The opening of the temple, also known as the kapat opening, marks the beginning of the annual Char Dham Yatra, attracting lakhs of pilgrims from across India and abroad.
The temple remains closed during the winter months due to extreme snowfall in the Himalayan region. Each year, the reopening date is decided on the occasion of Mahashivratri, and the temple usually opens around April or May when weather conditions become favorable for travel.
On the opening day, special rituals and ceremonies were performed by temple priests amid chanting of Vedic mantras. The idol of Lord Kedarnath is ceremoniously brought back from its winter seat in Ukhimath before the temple doors are opened for public darshan. Thousands of devotees gathered early in the morning to witness this spiritual event.
Located at an altitude of around 3,583 meters, Kedarnath is part of the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit in Uttarakhand. Pilgrims can reach the temple via a 16–18 km trek from Gaurikund, while helicopter services are also available for easier access.
The temple is expected to remain open until November 2026 (around Bhai Dooj), depending on weather conditions. Devotees planning to visit are advised to complete registration in advance and prepare for high-altitude travel.
The reopening of Kedarnath signifies not just the start of a pilgrimage, but also a deeply spiritual journey for millions seeking blessings and peace.
